Adam's Apple Reduction

Definition - What does Adam's Apple Reduction mean?

Chondrolaryngoplasty, the tracheal shave, or most popularly known as the Adam’s Apple reduction, is a surgical procedure which reduces the size of the thyroid cartilage commonly known as the Adam’s Apple. The procedure is most often done as part of the male-to-female gender transition process. The surgery leaves the patient with a leaner, feminine looking neck.

TheConsultation explains Adam's Apple Reduction

Adam’s Apple Reduction surgery is a medical procedure with the goal of shrinking the appearance of the thyroid cartilage. It is a common procedure as it is an integral part of the male-to-female gender reassignment process. During the surgery, the surgeon makes an incision on the neck from the chin down, and proceeds to separate the vertical neck muscles in order to expose and reach the thyroid cartilage. The thyroid cartilage is then shaved down, sculpted, and smoothed out in order to reduce the appearance of the bump on the neck.

The procedure is usually done in conjunction with vocal surgery, which aims to raise the pitch of the person’s voice, again with the purpose of achieving a higher level of feminization. The surgery is an outpatient procedure, meaning that the patient is not required to spend the night at the hospital but is sent to recover in the privacy of their homes shortly after the surgery.
