Definition - What does ArteFill mean?

ArteFill is an FDA-approved injectable filler that is primarily used to smooth the lines and wrinkles that extend from the lower corners of the nose to the mouth, the so-called smile lines. It is considered a permanent filler, as, besides cow-derived collagen and lidocaine, it consists of polymethylmethacrylate microspheres. Collagen breaks down over time, but the microspheres under the skin remain intact.

TheConsultation explains ArteFill

ArteFill treatment takes place in an outpatient setting in a plastic surgeon or the dermatologist's office. Prior to the injection, a topical numbing cream may be applied to eliminate any discomfort and the process does not last more than few minutes. Usually, there is no downtime and often there is no need for multiple treatments to achieve the desired effect. Unlike similar therapies that last up to six months, the results of ArteFill are proved to last at least five years.

In contrast to other fillers that are absorbed naturally by the body over time, ArteFill should be surgically removed from the skin if the patient wishes to.
