Male Breast Reduction

Definition - What does Male Breast Reduction mean?

Male breast reduction surgery is the cosmetic treatment approach to gynecomastia, the medical term for enlarged male breasts. This condition involves excess fat of the breast and/or mammary gland in men and occurs during adolescence. Apart from the psychological and aesthetic reasons, it's imperative the male gland to be removed in case of a rapid increase in breast volume in a short time without any pathological indications.

Depending on whether there is excess fat or mammary gland, the plastic surgeon would suggest either liposuction or surgical removal of the gland. In the latter approach, most of the time the gland is removed through a semicircular incision is made in the lower part of the nipple. In cases where there is a significant amount of loose skin, a circular incision is made around the nipple and at the same time, the surgeon tightens the skin of the area.

Depending on the method, local anesthesia or in combination with sedation is required and the patient stays in the hospital from a few hours to maximum one day. He also post-operatively has to wear a special dressing for 10 days, which, however, isn't visible under his clothes. The chest takes its final form in 4-6 months when the swelling has completely subsided. The scars in most cases almost completely disappear, and, since most men have hair on the chest, after six months, no one would notice that they have undergone the operation.
