Panniculectomy

Definition - What does Panniculectomy mean?

Panniculectomy is the cosmetic surgery that aims to remove excess, bulging skin and fat from the lower part of the abdomen in order to create a more flat and tight appearance. Unlike tummy tuck, panniculectomy is restricted only to the skin and fat without manipulating and tightening the abdominal muscles.

TheConsultation explains Panniculectomy

Panniculectomy is not a weight loss procedure. It refers to people, whose skin in the abdomen area, due to heredity, significant weight loss or pregnancy, has become sagging, causing distress. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Typically, the surgeon makes a long, horizontally-oriented incision from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area. Sometimes a vertical incision might be necessary. The procedure may last from 2-5 hours, depending on the extent of the problem and recovery time usually takes several weeks. After surgery, although the results are permanent, the patient needs to follow a healthy diet, in order to maintain the outcome.
