Definition - What does Scalpel Facial mean?
Scalpel facial, also known as dermaplaning, is a skin care treatment performed by dermatologists or licensed aestheticians with the goal of removing fine facial hair and dead skin cells with a scalpel. The scalpel leaves the skin bare as it gets rid of peach fuzz, dark spots, and superficial layers of dead skin. The treatment is often used in conjunction with other skin-care treatments, like microdermabrasion.
TheConsultation explains Scalpel Facial
The treatment entails the usage of a 10-inch medical-grade scalpel to scrape across the surface of the skin. The scalpel used in the procedure is the same type of scalpel used in surgery to cut the skin open, which is why it’s very important to have this treatment done by a certified professional as it can be quite dangerous in the hands of an untrained enthusiast. Before the scalpel is used, the skin has to be cleaned with medical alcohol and antiseptic wash to make sure there'll be no post-treatment break outs or infections.
The doctor then proceeds to scrape the skin with the scalpel to remove dead skin cells, dark spots and the vellus hair from the face. Hair is removed from the chin, cheeks, nose, forehead and neck areas. The treatment contributes to the luminosity of the skin, leaving the skin clearer and fresher, reducing pigmentation, making lines and wrinkles less visible to give it a significantly more youthful look. The exfoliation process continues after the procedure – the skin keeps gently peeling off in the form of white flakes for the next 48 hours. After the skin stops flaking off, the final result can be seen. Regular, continuous treatment is said to help reduce wrinkles.
The treatment is finished with the application of serums and creams rich with vitamin C and vitamin A. Dermaplaning is an effective alternative to laser hair removal and to waxing as it's painless, and recommended to fair skin types. Laser hair removal in particular is highly inefficient when it comes to the removal of very light hairs – dermaplaning is recommended as the most effective measure for the removal of blond or gray hair.
