Silicone Breast Implants

Definition - What does Silicone Breast Implants mean?

Silicone breast implants are made with an outer silicone shell that is then filled with silicone gel. These implants are generally used for women who are receiving breast augmentation, reconstruction, or revision (fixing issues with a previous implant). Five different types of silicone breast implant have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

TheConsultation explains Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are used for breast surgeries. The silicone material is an alternative to saline breast implants. Silicone comes in different sizes, shapes and can be found in different textures. Smooth or textured implant shells are the two texture types. Silicone breast implants have been approved for women over 22 for augmentation surgery, and for any age for breast reconstruction.

Silicone implants are not designed to be permanent, and the longer a patient has implants, the higher the likelihood that they will need to be removed or replaced.
