Unilateral Gynecomastia

Definition - What does Unilateral Gynecomastia mean?

Gynecomastia is characterized as a benign enlargement of the male breast. While gynecomastia is typically bilateral, it can occur unilaterally. Unilateral gynecomastia will only affect one of the patient’s breasts. Gynecomastia is the buildup of a rubbery mass that extends concentrically from the nipples.

Care should be taken to differentiate between gynecomastia and lipomastia.

TheConsultation explains Unilateral Gynecomastia

The effects of both gynecomastia and lipomastia are the enlargement of the male breast or breasts. However, lipomastia is the buildup of fat tissue while gynecomastia is the growth of a benign rubbery mass. While the appearance is similar, the conditions should be diagnosed appropriately.

While gynecomastia is often bound bilaterally, it can also occur in a single breast. Unilateral gynecomastia may be easier to differentiate from lipomastia than bilateral gynecomastia. Unilateral gynecomastia typically occurs on the left side of the body.
